Watch the Elysium trailer above.

The Official Poster for the movie Elysium

The movie I am going to analyse is the heavily anticipated Sci-Fi movie Elysium, Elysium is In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet's crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium - but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens' luxurious lifestyle

"We're going to break into the most heavily guarded place in the Universe"

The Elysium trailer is overall great, it's technically and symbolically put together very well. It shows in many ways why Elysium is going to be a contender for film of 2013 in a professional manner, for instance, it broadcasts the fact they have two intelligent actors who have a great reputation in the film business. This was expected of Niell Blomkamp (Director of Elysium) who had a storming budget of $115 million to create the movie. This reflects on the movie and the trailer, with clear signs that there was high production values with stunning cinematic effects and obviously a great studio set, as they had to create two totally different worlds, one for the poor and one for the rich who are living on a flying spaceship/planet above, in a 'totally different world'. The trailer is very intense with words flashing onto the screen every so often stating facts such as "only the rich can survive", this makes the film seem dramatic, aswell as the epic movie soundtrack behind which adds tension and suspense and makes you want to keep watching on and find out what happens.

Blomkamps low key lighting on main star Matt Damon was greatly done in the trailer to portray Damon as a human superhero, shading all around him and focusing on how serious and dominant he is in a scene. The body language of the people of Elysium is relaxed and peaceful, while the people of Earth are standing slouched, or cowardly, getting on with their day-to-day labouring jobs or queuing up for their rashions, they look scared of the people/robots of Elysium. Damon has a funny walk, a cheeky smile which can turn into a tight grimace, his sudden outburst of anger, fast, witty speech and flat voice makes his style makes him great in the trailer.

In the trailer it tells us the film is set in the year 2154, but they dress like any other person from the year 2000.

Lastly, negatives of Elysium are that it has slightly-overdone camerawork, repeated un smooth pacing in some clips and overusing the camera effect slow motion
